About the Property
Nestled in the embrace of Oakland's serene landscape, 106 Glenwood Glade, also known as “Woodwardia Cottage” by its current owner and “the Fairy House” by neighborhood children, offers a magical retreat reminiscent of a scene from a storybook. Originally built by Lester M. Hale in 1922, this charming estate is intricately woven into the natural rocky contours of the Leona formation, creating a stunning example of architecture in harmony with nature.
Curbside is an inviting pit stop for neighbors to sit, linger, and indulge their imaginations. The yard art, full of frogs, fairies, gargoyles, gnomes, dragons, elves, and more brings the house to life. Built into tree trunks are doors to fairy houses that make it hard to believe your eyes. Above, the front windows are arched at their peaks, a unique shape. Their trim is a teal color which is complimentary to the redwood shingles. Knock with the front door’s gargoyle knocker, made of brass, then enter this one-of-a-kind, hand-built home.
Just inside, the ground’s rock formation explodes into the entry by way of an impressive stone fireplace, and there’s a seating area made from an old church pew and altar railing. Apparently, many of this home’s delightful features were sourced in a scavenger hunt of sorts—all pieces combined to construct the cottage. Look up and you will see the gorgeous hand-hewn beams. On the walls are hand-painted murals by Mr. Hale himself. Large windows let in a good amount of natural light and offer views of the gardens. Soaring ceilings combine the living and dining room areas, all atop Mahogany floors.
A few steps up is the sunlit primary bedroom with oak flooring and serene green vistas. The adjoining Asian-inspired ensuite features square tiling and a sauna. The quirky and cozy ambiance defines this unique space. Down the short set of stairs, you’re led to the kitchen, composed of blue tile kitchen walls, wooden butcher block counters, a stainless steel fridge, redwood walls and cabinets, and fir flooring. The pantry, originally a cooler for canned goods, flour, and milk deliveries offers storage.
The basement houses a second bedroom, currently used as an office, with a custom desk built around the home’s foundation. Windows frame views of the garden's splendor, and a hidden latrine on the exterior offers convenience for outdoor gatherings.
The garden is lovingly curated by a living tapestry of lush greenery and mature trees. Aged stumps adorned with lichen, trails of clematis, and carpets of moss set the enchanting scene, while a diverse collection of ferns thrive under a canopy of oaks and plums. There are shaded pathways lined with the rich textures of begonias and azaleas. Descending towards Temescal Creek, one is treated to a picturesque view cascading over natural terraces. Lava rocks lie subtly among the original boulders. The yard spreads to both sides of the creek and is connected by a footbridge. The whole lot — feels like a miracle.
106 Glenwood Glade has evolved under careful stewardship by the same owners for the last 42 years, ensuring that each element remains a tribute to the natural beauty of Oakland. Visitors are encouraged to explore and experience the uninterrupted beauty of this garden, where every path and plant tells a story. Now on the lookout for an appreciative new owner, Woodwardia Cottage and its magical yard are available to purchase.
